With the implementation of EMV for credit and debit cards, card brands have been moving toward PIN transactions for credit cards. PIN entry has long been used as a security feature on debit cards, and credit cards are moving toward this technology too. As cards begin to require PIN entry, if your business is not accepting PIN entry, you may get chargebacks for transactions where the PIN was not entered.
Types of PIN Cards
There are three ways that a card can be set up regarding PIN entry:
PIN Entry | Explanation | Potential Effect on Your Business |
---|---|---|
PIN Irrelevant | PIN entry is not required by the card | N/A |
PIN Preferred | PIN entry is preferred though not required | If PIN entry is not implemented or bypassed/skipped and the customer disputes the charge, a chargeback might occur depending on how the card brand rules on the transaction |
PIN Required | PIN entry is required even if PIN entry is bypassed | If PIN entry is not implemented or bypassed/skipped and the customer disputes the charge, a chargeback will occur |
